Former President Barack Obama was recently spotted vacationing in Greece alongside longtime Hollywood ally Tom Hanks, with the high-profile gathering once again highlighting the close-knit circle of celebrity and political elites that has surrounded Obama since leaving office.

Newly published photos show Obama and Hanks dining together at Cantina, a luxury waterfront restaurant located on the Greek island of Sifnos. The dinner reportedly took place earlier this month and included several members of both families.

Obama was joined by former First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia Obama and Sasha Obama. Hanks attended alongside wife Rita Wilson.

According to reports, the group arrived at the restaurant by dinghy after traveling from a luxury yacht anchored nearby off the coast. An onlooker described the security presence around the party as overwhelming.

“I’m not one to get very starstruck – but seeing Obama in the flesh and so close was pretty surreal,” the witness reportedly said.

“Their presence was pretty overwhelming and that definitely wasn’t lessened by the excessive security – who we even had to ask if we could use the restroom,” the person added.

Photos from the outing showed Obama dressed casually in a black button-down shirt while Hanks wore a dark hoodie. Malia Obama, who has reportedly been pursuing screenwriting opportunities in Hollywood, wore a flowing patchwork skirt and cream cardigan. Sasha Obama, who recently completed her studies at the University of Southern California, appeared in a bright blue outfit.

The Greek getaway comes as Obama has been reemerging more aggressively into public political life during President Donald Trump’s second term. In recent months, Obama has ramped up speeches, social media messaging, fundraising appearances, and political organizing efforts aimed at boosting Democrats ahead of upcoming elections. Critics have argued that Obama has increasingly abandoned the traditional role former presidents typically play by staying largely out of day-to-day partisan politics.

Since then, the two families have repeatedly vacationed and socialized together. In 2017, Obama and Hanks were seen aboard a luxury yacht near Tahiti alongside Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen shortly after Obama left the White House.

Obama also attended Hanks and Wilson’s 30th wedding anniversary celebration in Hollywood in 2018, and the former president has reportedly remained close with the actor in the years since.

The latest images from Greece quickly circulated online, fueling renewed debate over the lifestyles of political and entertainment elites at a time when many Americans continue struggling with inflation, housing costs, and economic uncertainty. The trip also came shortly before Obama traveled to Athens to speak at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Nostos Conference, where he discussed democracy, global politics, and civic engagement.

While supporters see the former president’s international appearances as part of his ongoing public leadership role, critics argue the scenes from Greece reinforce a growing disconnect between powerful political figures and ordinary Americans increasingly frustrated with the nation’s political establishment.
