Trump Introduces Name Change For One Blue State, Dem Governor Erupts

President Donald Trump has floated a dramatic new name for one of America’s 50 states — and Democrats are already melting down over it.

Trump repeatedly promoted the idea of changing New Mexico to “New America” over the holiday weekend, posting maps, images and even an AI-generated video depicting the proposed makeover.

And judging by the president’s posts, he appears to be a big fan of the idea.

Trump shared several maps on Truth Social showing “New Mexico” replaced with “New America,” doubling down with multiple posts Monday after saying supporters had suggested the change.

“So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!”

One of the images showed the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”

Another AI-generated video took the trolling even further, depicting Trump personally changing a New Mexico sign.

Then the White House jumped in, amplifying one of the images through its official social media account.

That was enough to send New Mexico’s Democratic leadership into a fury.

Democratic Governor Fires Back

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham quickly rejected Trump’s proposed rebranding, declaring that the state’s centuries-old name isn’t going anywhere.

“It’s been ours since before the United States existed,” the governor said. “What is up for debate? Who’s showing up for working families. While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. Americans are also spending more at the grocery store, losing access to health care and wondering if they’ll ever be able to afford a home.”

Grisham then touted policies enacted under Democratic leadership in New Mexico while taking another swipe at Trump’s viral map campaign.

“Under Democratic leadership here in New Mexico, we’re providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to health care and investing in housing. While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work,” the governor stated.

But Trump’s latest proposal isn’t coming out of nowhere.

It’s the latest chapter in the president’s push to put a distinctly American stamp on some of the country’s most recognizable geographic names.

Trump Keeps Putting ‘America’ On The Map

The Trump administration previously changed the federal government’s usage of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Trump has also recently pushed referring to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

Now, New Mexico appears to be next on his list.

There is, however, one major obstacle.

Renaming an actual state isn’t as simple as changing the federal government’s terminology for a body of water.

New Mexico’s Constitution explicitly states that “The name of this state is New Mexico,” meaning the president cannot simply make “New America” official through an executive order.

New Mexico officially became a state on Jan. 6, 1912, after Congress approved legislation allowing the territory to establish a state government and constitution.

But the legal hurdles haven’t stopped Trump from promoting the new name — or Democrats from reacting.

New Mexico Senators Pile On

Both of New Mexico’s Democratic U.S. senators joined the backlash.

Sen. Martin Heinrich vowed that Trump’s preferred geographic names wouldn’t be entering his vocabulary.

“Three things I will always call by their actual names… The Gulf of Mexico Lake Ontario New Mexico,” Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico stated in a post on X.

Sen. Ben Ray Luján went considerably further, attacking Trump personally.

“It’s New Mexico, always has been and always will be. Just like how you’ll always be a sinvergüenza and corrupt.”

Trump’s “New America” posts were part of a broader social media spree over Labor Day weekend featuring memes, maps and images involving U.S. territory and geographic names.

For now, New America isn’t replacing New Mexico on official maps.

But Trump has made unmistakably clear what he thinks of the proposed new name.

And judging by the furious reaction from the state’s Democratic leaders, he certainly succeeded in getting their attention.
