DNA testing in Nancy Guthrie case could take months but may be fast-tracked, expert says

Published

on

A leading genetic genealogist is predicting it could take months for testing results on a hair sample sent from a private lab in Florida to the FBI in the stalled search for answers surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie — but there are reasons to believe answers could come sooner.

It’s been more than 80 days since Guthrie’s suspected abduction from her home in the Catalina Foothills, in northern Tucson, Arizona. She is the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie.

“In my experience, it usually takes months, but I am assuming they will make it a top priority since most of the other cases are generally cold cases so it may be much quicker,” CeCe Moore, one of the nation’s leading genetic genealogists at Parabon Nanolabs in Virginia, told Fox News Digital. “It also depends on a little luck because sometimes they have to make multiple attempts before they get the DNA.”

LAB BEHIND GILGO BEACH KILLER CONVICTION BELIEVED TO BE INVOLVED IN NANCY GUTHRIE ABDUCTION CASE

Local and federal investigators showed public friction early in the probe, when the Pima County Sheriff’s Department elected to send DNA evidence to a private lab in Florida called DNA Labs International — rather than to the FBI.

More than 11 weeks later, tests on a hair sample have led to no publicly known advancement in the case, and authorities finally transferred the sample to the FBI.

“FBI asked to test this DNA 2 months ago with the same technology we’ve always had — when the local sheriff instead sent it to a private lab,” said Ben Williamson, the bureau’s assistant director of public affairs. “Any further developments we will share as soon as appropriate.”

It remains to be seen who the hair belongs to and whether they could be considered a suspect.

Due to the lack of answers, experts like Moore believe the hair sample is rootless, making DNA testing more complicated but not impossible.

“Hopefully that will mean the SNP profile can be created more quickly than is typical in my experience, so the IGG can begin to identify the owner of that hair,” she said.

IGG is investigative genetic genealogy, the field she specializes in. It involves a combination of DNA profiles and traditional research, where investigators combine genetics, public records and other information to gin up leads that can help identify a person of interest through their heritage.

“At that point, we just have to hope that the hair actually belongs to Nancy’s kidnapper and not someone else who happened to visit her or had their hair transferred to her home,” Moore said.

Rootless hair samples helped land Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann in prison decades after his first murder. He pleaded guilty earlier this month and is expected to receive multiple life sentences in June.

San Francisco-based Astrea Forensics, which did lab work on the Heuermann case for the FBI, is now expected to be involved in the Guthrie investigation.

Lab officials contacted by Fox News Digital have declined to comment.

A combined reward of more than $1.2 million in the case remains unclaimed.

“First Take” host acts disgusted when she has to cover Vrabel-Russini drama

Published

Brace yourselves. Go ahead and take a seat for this, and then take a deep breath. You ready?

ESPN’s holier-than-thou debate show, ‘First Take,’ was forced to discuss the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini news this morning. I know. Wild stuff. I can’t believe those saints would dive into this scandalous story.

Will Stephen A. Smith be OK? Will host Shae Cornette be able to sleep tonight?

I don’t know. Thoughts and prayers to the World Wide Leader. They had to finally cover the BIGGEST STORY IN THE NFL FROM THE PAST MONTH! God forbid.

Before we dive in, here’s the clip from this morning’s show, which aired mere hours after Vrabel announced he would be skipping Day 3 of the NFL Draft for some self-help:

My God. What world am I living in here? Really? First Take is really above covering the Vrabel-Russini drama?

Since when?

This is the same show that features Mad Dog Russo screaming like a maniac into the camera every week, right?

The same one where Stephen A. wears a cowboy hat on set 14 times a season just to piss off Dallas fans?

STEPHEN A SMITH, SHANNON SHARPE UNLOAD ON ESPN COLLEAGUES AFTER COMMENTS MADE ABOUT ‘FIRST TAKE’

The same one where Cam Newton had some weird, fake drama with Drake Maye all of last season?

Get outta here! And now, they’re just disgusted because they have to address an NFL coach leaving his team during the draft to seek therapy because he was caught canoodling with a reporter? THAT’s where First Take draws the line?

LEBRON JAMES BLASTS ESPN’S STEPHEN A. SMITH AMID FEUD: ‘MISSED THE WHOLE POINT’

“Why can’t you be away on Monday? Why does this have to become my business? I don’t want this to be my business. I didn’t want any of this to be my business, quite frankly.”

So sorry, Shae, that Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini inconvenienced your perfect little show. Sorry they interrupted the constant LeBron/Cowboys talk. Sorry Mike didn’t hold off on the therapy until Monday so you could avoid talking about it on your show.

The show, by the way, where you get PAID to talk about the biggest sports topics of the day.

Hilarious. It’s just amazing.

ESPN never disappoints.

Elizabeth Warren confronted on calling controversial senate candidate Graham Platner her ‘kind of man’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., was confronted in a new interview over campaigning with Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine who has come under fire over having a tattoo viewed as a Nazi symbol among other controversies, and saying that he’s her “kind of man.”

CNBC host Sara Eisen pressed Warren during “Squawk on the Street” Wednesday about her support for Platner, saying, “This is a guy that had a chest tattoo with a Nazi symbol. OK, he apologized for it. It’s a guy that reportedly wrote that people concerned about rape should take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f—ed up that they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to. He praised military tactics used by Hamas, reportedly in comments online, and read it when they were murdering Israeli soldiers. So I’m just curious why you think he’s your kind of man?”

Warren responded, “So, as you rightly point out, he has apologized. He’s out meeting with the people of Maine every single day so they can evaluate not who Graham Platner was, but who Graham Platner is today.”

The liberal senator went on to explain the context of her comment and said at first she didn’t know anything about Platner.

SQUAD MEMBER SUMMER LEE CALLS ‘UPPER CLASS’ THE ‘ENEMY’ AT EL-SAYED RALLY

“I’m reading an interview with him, and he’s asked, ‘When did you first know that the game was rigged?’ And he harks back to the 2008 crash, when 10 million families lost their homes, when 8 million people lost their jobs, when millions of people lost their savings, and when big banks cheated folks, when non-bank financial institutions tricked them, robbed them of their homes, and Graham Platner’s answer on when he knew the game was rigged was when not one banker went to jail. And I said, ‘That’s my kind of man,’” Warren said.

Eisen pushed back further and asked whether the Democrats wanted to be the “party of inclusivity.”

“I want to be the party that stands up for hard-working people,” Warren said. “I want to be the party that is transformative of an economy that right now is hip-deep in corruption and an economy that’s working for a handful of billionaires and multi-multi-multimillionaires and not working for much of anyone else, I want us to be the party that actually delivers on lowering costs and that expands opportunities. And that’s what Graham Platner wants to do. And I’m there to stand with him and to help in that fight.”

DEM SENATE PRIMARY ERUPTS IN KEY STATE AS CANDIDATE TEAMS UP WITH RADICAL STREAMER: ‘AMERICA DESERVED 9/11’

Warren joined Platner in Portland, Maine, on Saturday, where she said he was her “kind of man.”

Maine’s Democratic primary is June 9, with Platner working to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November’s general election. Platner is running against Maine Gov. Janet Mills for the party’s nomination in an effort to unseat Collins, a moderate swing vote in the Senate.

Platner’s past controversies have been political fodder for the Mills campaign, including directing voters to his decade-old Reddit posts in which he appeared to place blame on sexual assault victims and defended Hamas military moves, among other messages from the 2013 and 2014 era. Platner also came under fire for having a chest tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol, which he has since apologized for and covered.
